FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Houston, Texas – June 14, 2025
LAKE HOUSTON FLIGHT SET FOR SEASON FOUR AS THEY AIM FOR FIRST NBL–US TITLE
Founding Franchise Returns with New Leadership and Renewed Championship Aspirations
HOUSTON, Texas – The Lake Houston Flight, a charter member of the National Basketball League–United States (NBL–US), today announced their much-anticipated return for the 2025–2026 season. After a strategic one-year rebrand and front-office restructuring, the Flight are poised to recapture their early-season form and pursue the organization’s inaugural championship.
Historical Journey & Recent Performance
-
Inaugural Success (2020): As one of the six founding franchises in the NBL–US, the Flight reached the semifinals in the league’s debut season, laying the groundwork for a competitive legacy.
-
Adversity and Growth (2022): Under then–Head Coach Lenard Taylor’s first year at the helm, the team endured a 3–7 campaign. Lessons learned during that rebuilding phase fueled organizational changes.
-
Championship Contention (2023): Returning to form, Lake Houston battled through the playoffs to reach the 2023 championship game, falling just short on a last-second shot to eventual champion East Houston United.
-
Strategic Hiatus & Rebrand (2024): The Flight opted to sit out the 2024 season to overhaul branding, enhance community outreach, and reposition key leadership—most notably as Coach Taylor transitioned to General Manager of the NBL–US.
A New Era of Leadership
-
Coaching Appointment: The Flight have named veteran coach Maria “MJ” Johnson as Head Coach. Johnson brings twelve years of professional coaching experience, including two WNBA playoff appearances and a reputation for developing two-way players.
-
Front Office Revamp: James “JT” Turner, formerly Assistant GM with the Houston Hustle, joins as General Manager. Turner is known for identifying under-the-radar talent and implementing data-driven roster strategies.
“Lake Houston Flight has deep roots in our league’s history, and their return with fresh leadership signals a renewed commitment to excellence,” said Commissioner Lillian Countee. “With Coach Johnson’s proven track record and GM Turner’s visionary approach, I expect the Flight not only to reach the Finals but to compete as genuine title contenders. This franchise’s passion for the game and its community will be on full display as they chase that elusive first championship.”
Season Four Outlook
-
Talent Acquisition: Leveraging Turner’s analytical scouting model, the Flight have prioritized versatile wings and rim-protecting bigs—aiming for a roster balance that can adapt to any playoff style.
-
Homecourt Advantage: Returning to the refurbished Lake Houston Center, the team will unveil upgraded locker rooms, a dedicated practice facility, and enhanced fan amenities, including courtside lounges and interactive fan zones.
-
Community Engagement: Off the court, the Flight will expand their youth basketball outreach, launching “Flight Academy” clinics across the Lake Houston area, with scholarship opportunities for standout participants.
